A Forage cap of Oats by Snaffles
"The Balaclava vetern who told me that the corn ration was fed to the horses from their forage caps also said that the Light Brigade never got out of a trot or slow canter, for the horses were in such poor condition. This is easy to imagine, for a capful of oats must have been a starvation ration, and does not say much for the commissariat arrangements in the Crimea."
